Malta Handball Association
The Malta Handball Association (MHA) was founded in 1995. Mr Louis Borg was elected President of the newly founded Association. The MHA became a full member of the European Handball Federation in March 1996. A few months later it gained full recognition within the International Handball Federation. During that year, an introductory social league was organized with Birzebbugia Carini Stores ending up as winners.
The Association had eight registered team. The Malta Handball Association organized in-house handball clinics, referees courses, seminars for Physical education teachers related to mini handball, beach handball tournaments and the first national league. Later on, the association organized national leagues for junior categories and an inter-schools competition to establish the game of handball within Skolasport and Sport for all programme.
In 1999 the men’s National team made its international debut in Cyprus during the first edition on the European Handball Federation Challenge Trophy. The Maltese team managed to chalk up a historic victory against Ireland.
Throughout out the years the National teams participated in various International tournaments in different age groups and categories.
In the years 2003, 2009 and 2011, the Malta Handball Association organized the European Handball Federation Challenge Trophy.
This season (2012/13), the association has a record of 39 registered teams and over 400 registered players taking part in this season’s competitions. The MHA is also planning to organize a Ladies International friendly tournament.
